This module aims to underline the responsibility of humanitarian actors to ensure safe and responsible management of the data they collect from people as part of their humanitarian activities. This module highlights the severe personal risks involved if humanitarian and personal data is not managed responsibly, while also providing key principles to inform your way of thinking about data management, and practical steps for ensuring responsible data management in a humanitarian response.
This course is part of HOP Fundamentals, an open-access, self-paced catalogue of quality assured and interactive learning modules, curated by partner providers or created by Save the Children. It is one of three levels of the HOP.
Fundamentals is aimed at people beginning their career in the humanitarian sector or for those transitioning from the development sector. It is also aimed at individuals who have never received formal training on the essentials of humanitarian action, or for those wishing to ‘refresh’ their knowledge.

Be able to define data protection and personal data
Be able to identify data protection risks in humanitarian contexts using a data protection risk assessment
Understand privacy and data protection and ethical requirements in the data life-cycle
Understand the concept of informed consent and when one might need it
Have a resource of practical examples and top tips for ensuring responsible data management in humanitarian contexts.

Any staff who have contact with beneficiary data or humanitarian operations data, as well as SMT and Regional MT staff responsible for risk management. E.g. project officers, MEAL officers, PDQ director, Programme Director/HoP, Country Director, Regional Director, Humanitarian Programme Director, Regional Humanitarian Lead.
