This Introduction to History of Humanitarianism module is part of HOP Fundamentals, an open-access, self-paced catalogue of quality assured and interactive learning modules, curated by partner providers or created by Save the Children. It is one of three levels of the HOP. 


Fundamentals is aimed at people beginning their career in the humanitarian sector or for those transitioning from the development sector. It is also aimed at individuals who have never received formal training on the essentials of humanitarian action, or for those wishing to ‘refresh’ their knowledge. 


Fundamentals has been carefully designed to provide a streamlined learning journey which covers the key topics related to the delivery of quality emergency responses.

How will I benefit from this module?


This module aims to provide an overview of the changing humanitarian ideas and practices of major international aid organisations.

This module describes the development of humanitarian principles such as neutrality, impartiality and independence, but also others like internationalism. It explores how these principles have been shaped and reshaped in humanitarian responses and should be understood as a history of humanitarianism, not the history of all humanitarianisms.
