In 2010 Save The Children set up the 'Support to economic recovery of urban and peri-urban households' project in Karoi, Zimbabwe.

The district had suffered severe economic hardship, hyperinflation and a devastating cholera outbreak in recent years. People received cash on the condition that they worked on a program of public works intended to reduce the risk of a further cholera outbreak in Karoi town. This type of project is known as a cash for work program.
