IRC Interpreter Training
Welcome to the IRC's Interpreter Training course.
Accurate communication is the cornerstone of competent, effective casework services. This training coupled with trainer's lead, equips interpreter candidates, bilingual staff and volunteer interpreters with the skills and knowledge to professionally and ethically assist and serve clients when interpreting. The course covers ethics, basic skills, positioning, modes of interpreting and other vital interpreting skills while promoting national ethics and standard of practice. During the course of the training, each student learns how to best serve as a conduit, clarifier, and if necessary also a cultural broker and advocate.Ideally, prior to taking this course the candidates should take a language proficiency test in both English and their target language. For the training efficiency of the rising community interpreters, this course is to be combined with a live session/s provided by certified community interpreter trainers. Only a blended learning experience, with in-person assessments and the guidance on how to apply the course would produce tangible results, ensure the community interpreter’s competency and have the desired impact. The trainer would offer answers, advice and facilitate group exercises, as well as tips and connections to professional learning materials. No student taking this course without the guidance and supervision of a trainer will be ready and qualified to interpret in a business environment, in a performance per-fee setting.
