Welcome to an Introduction to Ethical AI Decision-Making in Humanitarian Work.
This module from the Humanitarian Leadership Academy and Data Friendly Space has been produced as an output from the 2025/26 joint global research on how humanitarians are using artificial intelligence (AI). You’ll be guided through humanitarian practitioner scenarios, AI use cases, and ethical decision-making processes.

Is this course for me?
This course is designed for learners working in the humanitarian sector who want to better understand how AI tools can be used responsibly in their work. The module introduces human-in-the-loop approaches and ethical decision-making processes and is suitable for both technical and non-technical audiences.

How will I benefit from this course?
By the end of this course, learners will be able to:
● Understand key principles, including data minimization and purpose limitation; do not endanger; human oversight and accountability; inclusion and non-discrimination; informed consent; and preservation of humanitarian principles, neutrality, impartiality, and independence.
● Recognise some of the unintentional negative effects
● Describe how to avoid and mitigate ethical risks in using AI tools in humanitarian work
● Demonstrate how to plan AI-supported processes -
How long will it take?
It should take you about 20 minutes to complete the course.
It's up to you whether you complete it in a single sitting or spread it out over several sessions. If you do choose to spread it over a number of sessions, the course will automatically record your progress, and you will be able to resume where you left off.
