Welcome to the first in a series of modules exploring how we can manage climate and conflict displacement through environmentally grounded, regenerative strategies. Presented by Re-Alliance, this course empowers humanitarian practitioners and community responders to look beyond immediate relief and to integrate nature-inspired design for long-term resilience.

In the first introductory module, you will explore key terms and concepts of regeneration, learning how land, camps and communities can be supported to ensure they regrow and flourish even after disaster.

Welcome to an Introduction to a Regenerative Humanitarian Response

This online, self-directed course is designed for humanitarian practitioners and community-based responders, and those helping their own communities to thrive in challenging contexts. This introductory module introduces you to the core concepts of nature-based regenerative approaches.

  • Is this course for me?

    This course is intended for humanitarian practitioners and community responders.

  • What will I learn?

By the end of the introductory module, you will be able to:

  • Identify different 'regenerative movements' (like Agroecology, Regenerative Design, or Permaculture) and related fields (such as nature-based solutions, or climate mitigation and adaptation)
  • Understand key differences between sustainability and regeneration
  • Apply the three core ethics of Permaculture to your work: Earth Care, People Care, and Fair Share
  • Use nature-inspired principles to inform a community based response, recognising the importance of community action in humanitarian work
  • Work with simple design approaches, such permaculture's SADIM method, or Re-Alliance's 6 IMDIRA stages
  • Know where to find and use existing support materials: from Re-Alliance, the Global Ecovillage Network, The Sphere Handbook and Sphere's Nature-based Solutions for Climate Resilience in Humanitarian Action.

  • How long will it take?

    The introductory module should take approximately between 1 to 2 hours to complete.
