About this course

Short Summary:

This 15-hour course will provide you with the knowledge, tools, and practical guidance needed to conduct effective quantitative field research in complex contexts, based on the cumulative experiences of IMPACT Initiatives' staff who have conducted assessment work for over a decade across more than 30 countries. Learners will be asked to build on foundational theoretical knowledge of quantitative research and sampling methods, to focus on best practices for adapting theory to realistic circumstances encountered in various field contexts.

Welcome to Best Practices for Applied Quantitative Research in Complex Contexts

This MOOC is designed for individuals planning to collect quantitative data in fragile and complex settings and will teach you the knowledge, tools and practical guidance needed to conduct effective quantitative field research in complex contexts.

Learning outcomes
  •  Is this course for me?

This course is intended for all individuals who are planning to collect quantitative data in fragile and complex settings, including hard-to-reach settings. Although academics or students looking to do field work may also find this course useful, the content is primarily tailored to suit the needs of humanitarians who may not call themselves researchers but who have some research-related tasks in their job descriptions.

  • What will I learn?

    • - Understand common quantitative research methodologies and sampling strategies and describe how they are adapted for operationalization in complex crisis contexts.
    • - Summarize best practices, key bottlenecks, and mitigation strategies for planning and implementing primary quantitative research in complex crisis contexts.
    • - Apply quantitative research methodologies and sampling strategies in real life cases.
    • - Explain key cross-cutting lessons learned for the implementation of quantitative field research and the implications they can have for the desired research outcomes.
    • - Apply best practices related to designing quantitative field research, enumerator training, piloting, feedback, and data cleaning mechanisms in scenario-based learning settings.
    •

  • How long will it take?

It should take approximately 15 hours to complete.

  • How much does it cost?

    This course is free.
