This 30-minute online course provides insight into ageing and highlights the challenges older men and women face and the factors that put them at increased risk in a humanitarian crisis caused by conflict or natural disaster. It is intended to guide you to promote an inclusive humanitarian response to ensure that older people are taken into account before, throughout and after the response.
This course is designed for any staff and volunteers in humanitarian organizations at community, local, national or international level, including programme management staff and senior staff, with little knowledge of ageing or working with older people in humanitarian contexts.
Objectives:
- Define older age
- Understand the perceptions of ageing and attitudes towards older people
- Identify the physiological changes to people with age
- Explain the challenges faced by older people in humanitarian contexts, and factors increasing their vulnerability
- Apply possible modifications to assistance to ensure inclusion
