Welcome to the Psychological First Aid (PFA) for Children course.

This course will introduce you to the concepts and steps involved in providing support to children following a distressing event. It includes activities that focus on the core elements of PFA and how to apply them in a humanitarian context.

Is this course for me?
Yes, definitely! In humanitarian or disaster response work, you may come into contact with children who need immediate support. PFA for adults is widely used by members of all sectors involved in humanitarian action, but addressing the needs of children is just as important. This course is especially relevant to you if you are working in the field with communities and families, or if you are working in the area of child protection, MHPSS, health, education, shelter or nutrition. The course is also valuable if part of your job role is developing the capacity of others. If you are a member of senior management through to middle management or community responder, this course will also help you to develop skills you need to communicate with children in distress and help them to access the immediate supports they need.

How will I benefit from this course?
On completion of this course you will:
Be able to use the skills and knowledge you have learned in this course to provide psychological first aid to children and families.
Understand the importance of responding to children in an empathetic manner.
Understand the different reactions of children according to their age and stage of development and adapt how you speak to, and deal with children and their families.
Be able to identify children in need of support.
Understand the actions and the different techniques needed to provide PFA, including communicating with children and dealing with a child in the initial stage of distress.
Apply the action principles - Look, Listen, Link - in the provision of PFA.

How long will it take?
It should take you about 90 minutes including pre- and post-assessments.

How much does it cost?
This course is free.

Will I get a certificate at the end?
You will be able to get a digital badge after you have completed pre-assessment, the module, post-assessment and the feedback form.
