Welcome to a Teacher Professional Development Course from Save the Children
This e-learning course will take you through six short modules to assist your professional development. These modules were designed by teachers for teachers, to provide you with clear and contextually relevant techniques and practical examples to use in your classroom.
These short practical modules provide an: Introduction to Literacy, Fluency in Literacy, Vocabulary for Reading, Code of Conduct, Girls Education, and Conflict Sensitive Education.

Is this course for me? Yes - If you are a teacher, trainer of teachers, district education or ministry of education officials, or you support the training of teachers through your work with Save the Children or any of our partner organisations.

How will I benefit from this course? On completion of these modules you will:
- Module 1 - Introduction to Literacy
- You will know the six core components of Literacy
- You will be able to provide examples of how learners are improving their reading skills
- You will understand the value of print in your classroom and tips for developing useful classroom print materials
- Module 2 - Fluency in Literacy
- You will be able to explain the importance of fluency in reading for comprehension
You will be able to use different strategies in their classroom to promote fluency
You will be able to use strategies to help learners who may be struggling to see and so read text
- Module 3 - Vocabulary for Reading
- You will be able to explain how vocabulary development is important for competent readers
You will be able to use different strategies in your classrooms to develop learners’ reading vocabulary
You will be able to recognise and address potential differences between girls and boys in vocabulary development
- Module 4 - Code of Conduct
- You will be able to describe the roles and responsibilities of a teacher both inside and outside of classroom and school settings
You will have strategies to help foster a positive classroom environment by establishing clear rules and using discipline rather than punishment
You will be able to demonstrate teaching and assessment strategies that cultivate inclusive classroom environments
- Module 5 - Girls Education
- You will be able to define the terms ‘gender’ and ‘sex’ and explain how the language we use could reinforce or tackle gender stereotypes
You will be able to identify specific ways in which girls are often disadvantaged in classroom and school settings
You will be able to apply differentiation and gender-responsive strategies to lesson content, tasks, and assessment.
- Module 6 - Conflict Sensitive Education
You will be able to recall and apply the three-step model for providing psychological first aid with students who have experienced conflict
You will be able to identify and develop knowledge, skills and behaviours of conflict-sensitive education and explain their importance in their schools and communities

How long will it take? Each module takes between 25-40 minutes to complete

How much does it cost? This course is free!

Will I get a certificate at the end? Yes - you will be able to download a certificate once you have have completed all of the modules within the course.
