Welcome to the SHIP Distance Learning course
The SHIP programme consists of two parts – a Distance Learning (DL) online course and an Online Simulation. The DL course will be held over a period of 10 weeks. Note that you need to have submitted all assignments to participate in the Online Simulation. It is expected that each participant commits a minimum of six to eight hours a week to complete the DL course.
Aim
To ensure participants have a good overall understanding of working in a humanitarian context, of child rights based and quality programming and of the Save the Children humanitarian response procedures, policies and tools to use in a first phase humanitarian response.
The theory acquired during the Distance
Learning will be put to the test and practically applied during the Residential
training, when participants are asked to set up a first phase humanitarian
emergency response.

Is this course for me?
The SHIP provides SCI mid-level field staff, SC Member staff and staff from local partner representatives from longstanding partner organizations, with the skills, knowledge and experience necessary to meet a first phase humanitarian response.
Designed to build the next generation of mid-level humanitarian workers, the programme draws on Save the Children’s extensive expertise and experience to cover all the essential aspects of emergency response required for humanitarian personnel. The SHIP is an operational, child focused, humanitarian response training which aims to strengthen capacity to respond to emergencies, utilizing SCI policies and procedures and global quality standards.

Criteria
Over 3 years’ experience in humanitarian or over 5 years’ experience in development work
A minimum of six months service for Save the Children or a longstanding Save the Children partner
Ability to demonstrate a clear benefit of participating in the programme to your current role
Potential to deploy during a humanitarian emergency response as a mid-level manager/ advisor

How will I benefit from this course?On completion of this course you will:
Gained a broad understanding on both sector standards and the key players within the humanitarian sector
An understanding and knowledge of the various policies and procedures that SCI uses and what is expected when setting up a first phase response
An understanding of the concepts of child sensitive programming and partnerships
A good understanding of the needs assessment process, tools available, methodologies to be used and pitfalls avoided
An understanding of various funding mechanisms available and how to access them

How long will it take? This course is divided into a Distance Learning course, consisting of 6 modules, and a four-day online simulation training.
The Distance Learning course takes 10 weeks with 6-8 hours of weekly work.
The Online Simulation is a 4-day training. The simulation takes place on MS Teams and runs for approx. 3 hours a day. Participants should expect to put in more around outside of the simulation hours.

How much does it cost? There is a subsidized fee of USD 500 per participant including the Distance Learning and an Online simulation.
Attending the SHIP Residential is subject to satisfactory completion of the Distance Learning and Online Simulation and a further fee of USD 1.500 (Excluding travel costs and hotels).
The cost maybe further subsidized for regional staff, refer to the information package on the specific SHIP course you wish to attend.

Will I get a certificate at the end? Yes - you will be able to download a certificate once you have have completed all of the modules within the course.
