Welcome to the Humanitarian Essentials Package. This training package is designed for in-country, entry level humanitarian workers. It introduces learners to the foundations of humanitarian response and provides a platform for early career humanitarians to deepen their knowledge according to the context in which they are working.

We would ask that if you work through all or part of the pathway that you provide feedback via this survey in order to help us improve the experience and the learning provided.

The Humanitarian Essentials package is made up of seven modules:

1.    Humanitarian principles and standards
2.   Understanding the humanitarian context
3.   The international legal framework
4.   Age, gender and diversity
5.   Safety and security
6.   Communicating in times of crisis
7.   Maintaining personal wellbeing

Within each of the 7 modules there are up to four topics that address different skills and knowledge to attain the relevant competencies. The topics are built using existing online courses.

You can study this package as set out, or you can navigate your own route through it depending upon your existing knowledge and skill set. The content is all on-line and there are useful documents (policy guidance, handbooks, tip sheets) embedded in the topics/modules. We expect the pathway to take approximately 15 hours of study. It is not expected that you will study the package in one go, but break it up into manageable study sessions to suit you.

By completing this package you will be able to:

o   Describe and apply humanitarian principles and standards
o   Identify the major actors in humanitarian response
o   Describe the main components of the international humanitarian architecture
o   Recognize relevant coordination mechanisms at both national and international levels
o   Apply basic coordination skills
o   Identify relevant bodies of international law
o   Explain how international law underpins humanitarian action
o   Explain the importance of applying an age, gender and diversity sensitive approach in all phases of humanitarian response
o   Apply precautionary and preparative actions to address security risks
o   Apply practical techniques to manage personal wellbeing
o   Communicate clearly with affected populations
o   Remain accountable to affected populations

These are the core learning outcomes of the package, but each topic/module will have its own learning outcomes to give you a more detailed steer on the learning you can expect from each module.
