Note: this MOOC is free of charge and open to all!

In these times of increasing incidences of humanitarian crises, shrinking funding, and the complex nature of development work, there is a greater demand for financial accountability in the NGO sector. Managers who lead activities in the field—project managers, technical experts, and others—are critical if we are to improve NGO financial accountability. Yet too often they lack the skills and training support to help them succeed in this area.

Brought to you by Humentum and the Humanitarian Leadership Academy, this four-week MOOC, from 26 February to 23 March 2018, provides an overview of financial management. It is specially designed for non-finance staff, and will also be of use to those with some subject knowledge who wish to build on their skills and experience.

This MOOC serves as an introduction to the newly launched FMD Pro (Financial Management for Development Professionals) certification program. FMD Pro was created by NGOs for NGOs, to improve financial management skills across the humanitarian and development sectors.

Important note: This course provides an overview and a refresher of the core content of the FMD Pro syllabus. It is not intended to serve as preparation for the FMD Pro certification examination.  Course facilitators will provide further information on next steps for FMD Pro certification.

The course consists of four week-long modules.  It begins with an exploration of key concepts, and then introduces the four building blocks of effective financial management:

Module 1: Accounting records

Module 2: Financial planning

Module 3: Financial monitoring

Module 4: Internal control

By the end of the course, you will be able to:

  • describe the key components and processes in a strong financial management system
  • describe which accounting records and systems are needed to track project resources
  • introduce budgeting tools and techniques in your work to plan for effective programs
  • use budget monitoring reports to track progress in your projects
  • apply key internal control policies and procedures to reduce the risk of fraud, theft and bribery.

To get the most out of the course, we recommend that you allow 3 hours to complete each weekly module. This is a global, social learning experience—you will be connected with hundreds of other learners from around the world, and together you will share your experiences.

The MOOC features learning resources that are freely available to you and your organization to use in building skills and knowledge. As a course participant, you may adapt the materials to use in your own training programs, as long as they comply with the terms of the Creative Commons license.
