The Personal Safety and Security module from Save the Children International.

Learning objectives

This course will help learners to:

  Apply the six stages of personal safety and security in varying situations.

  Adopt the procedure for preparing for overseas travel and deployment (NB this course covers Save the Children procedures, which may not be the same as in other organisations)

Identify and reduce the potential risks associated with field travel and deployment.

  Recognise the importance of various communication modes and their use in the field.

  Identify the techniques to avoid and to respond to an arrest and a detention situation.


This course was designed for Save the Children staff, but may be useful to all humanitarians and volunteers in high-risk situations.


This module will take around 3 hours to complete.
